Addicted, Disconnected or Isolated?

I recently ran across an awesome video that outlines a simple yet powerful concept related to the understanding and treatment of addiction. Chances are that you know someone, or unfortunately are someone, who deals with the detrimental consequences that a struggle with addiction can present. The word "addiction" has many associations and is in no way limited to the often assumed substance abuse disorders. We can be addicted not only to substances (food, drugs, clothes, money, etc.) but to behaviors (process addictions/compulsions) as well. In the theory outlined in the attached Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell video an effective remedy to addiction is offered. The reported remedy is the powerful impact that social connection has on decreasing addictive behavior. Relying on empirical research, this video makes the simple claim that with increased social connection, meaning IN PERSON interactions, the addicted individual will no longer feel the insatiable need to engage in the identified addictive behavior. I am always a mental health professional that is leery of "cure all" claims, especially the simple ones, but I wholeheartedly agree that the power of relationships can positively impact any and all illness, mental or otherwise.  If you, or anyone you know, struggle with addiction(s) I am passionate about exploring this and other solutions to any and all dysfunction you are experiencing. Take care of yourself!
